Day 9: Grand Canyon Rest Day - September 22, 2008

Today is a rest day and what better way to spend it then at the Grand Canyon. I tried to wake up for the sunrise but did not make it to the Canyon edge in time. Although the clouds were all purple and orange but in 10 minutes it turned gray as the sun got higher in the sky. I walked then from the Bright Angel Lodge to Yavapai Station along the rim trail. It is amazing how the canyon changes as you look at it from different angles. I took a bunch of photos but they just don’t do it justice. The canyon is so large that you just don’t get the details that seeing it in person gives you.

Trek Travel had their mechanic come out to look at the bikes and make any adjustments. Dan gave my bike a good check up and even replaced my brake and shifter cables.

My Trek Pilot bike is just over 4 years old and has about 14,000 miles on it. Dan also has a wealth of bike knowledge. Trek recommends that you do not screw down the bike valve screw all the way down since it will pull the tube against the edge of the valve stem hole and eventually cause a flat. In fact Trek does not even ship its bikes with it.

In the afternoon I took a nap and for dinner seven of us got together for dinner at El Tovar Hotel built in 1905.
